A good day for the world

4/7/2015

PictureGoogle's homage to Mistral. It was visible today in many of the world's Spanish-dominated countries.
Gabriela Mistral was born 126 years ago, today.  Most homages start with the fact that she was the first Latin American to win a Nobel Prize.  A few also mention that she was the last Latin American woman to win.  Fewer still point to her poetry.  This is unfortunate because it is a rich body with much to tell.  Perhaps the fullest archive on the internet can be found at the University of Chile.  Their page dedicated to Mistral includes poetry, prose, and correspondence.

Coincidentally, today also marks one hundred years since Billie Holiday’s birth.  Life is enriched when unrelated notions cross in unexpected ways.  Both of these women turned the energy of tragedy into the shared beauty of being human.  We are a better people thanks to them.  Happy birthday to both.
